Back in the USA!

By Sam Willoughby#91 on January 13, 2011

Australia was really fun! It was good being home in Adelaide and catching up with my family, and spending the Holidays with them. I especially had a great time with my older brother Matt . We always have a blast together - moto bike riding, mountain biking and Jet Skiing. It was a lot of fun.

After having a 3 week break after The Grands and only being on the bike for 2 weeks prior to the Nerang race, I wasn't too sure where I was going to be at for this traditional "big race" in Australia. Nerang was pretty good this year and the track was fine - especially considering the rain they have had there. The new start hill is great its 5 metres tall. Not quite a SX hill, but better than before.

Friday Night: This was a Cat 4 UCI race so it was good points up for grabs and it was pretty important that I did well. I felt good all night. The track was great despite the constant rain during the week leading up to it. I won all my heats and Semi and felt comfortable in the main. I was coming from the ouside and got across in turn 1, but unfotunately unclipped out of turn 1 and got hit by two riders - which put me back in 4th. So, I had a lot of ground to make up. I got back up to second in the pro section and then made a run for 1st down the 3rd and last straights, just managing to pass Luke Madil for the win right at the line. I was really happy with with my race to come back like I did - and it made for a great show for all of the fans watching.

Saturday: Once again I was feeling really comfortable on my Redline Fligth bike and won all of my heats and semi. In the main i was on the outside again but got a great start and blasted to the front, getting out of trouble down the first straight. I rode a clean lap for another win and also beat the track lap record by a whole second; which was cool!

Overall, I was really happy with how I rode this weekend and I felt it was great lead-up to my return to the U.S.. It was great to catch up with all the Australian  people and it was really cool to see how many Australian fans follow my stuff in the US.
If you've been watching the new, you probably heard about the Australian floods. They were not quite to Gold coast yet - they were further north, but it is raining bad everywhere. They are flooded in Brisbane now, which is an hour from the Gold Coast so i am sure its coming.  So much for the big drought we've had the past few years.

So now I'm back in San Diego. I was going to stay around down unda' longer, but its not supposed to stop raining there until March, so I figured I was better of coming back.  I won't be racing in Reno - and I am going to train up in January and get ready for the season starting in Oldsmar (February 12th).

PS:  Did everyone get to watch Anaheim 1? What was up with Stewart's starts?
I can't wait for Phoenix this week, then I am going to Anaheim 3 and San Diego SX after that. Go Dungey!
