My UCI-Worlds - by Kerstin Fritscher

By Kerstin Meyer on August 07, 2010

The first ever Worlds held in South Africa went well for me. We had a very great time down there, going on a safari and visiting beaches. Everything was well-organized and really nice. I wish we had such a "winter" over here ...

During the first practice, riding the (challenge-) track confirmed how it looked like: desingned for the power-people. The first double was really smooth and rideable any style, and between the jumps was a lot of space for pedalling. The turns were really big, and only the starting hill was a little lower than last year and less steep - too bad, because i really liked it the way it was.

On Wednesday evening the opening ceremony was held at the track, and the organizer made something special, and as I remember right, this was the first time, it ever happened. All last year's winners should be part of the ceremony, it was a great honor for me, being namely presented to the whole crowd in front of me. A memorable moment !

On Friday I had my 20" competition in the women 17 and over. With only 2 groups, the motos were full, but even though I did not know a lot of the other girls, I went on to win all my 3 motos and qualified for the main. I had a good gate, but after jumping the first double i was blocked immediatly from the outside, same after the next double. This caused me to slow down and missed the speed for jumping into the step-double - unfortunately I also had to take it girlie-style and went 2nd into the first turn. Here i went inside and went to pole for a few seconds, but since I had to pedal hard after that jump,  I had less speed than the other girl. From the second straight on i was in 2nd position and i could hold it to the finish line for a 2nd place at the worlds. Not too bad regarding that i am twice as old as most of the others !

On Sunday, cruiser was on the schedule, and here I could get into the race in my own age-class. I felt even better that day, maybe it was because of the way more relaxed mood in the German house; everyone was honest and we all understood really good.

Unfortunately there were not enough women in my age registered, and we were put together with the class below us; which meant we ran the 35-44 age-class. My moto was the easier one, and qualified very easy for the final. My gate was really good, and after jumping the first double i was already in front. After the first turn i never looked back, did not even hear the speaker go kind of crazy saying "look at this ... back to back world champion ..." After getting a deep breath i realized what i've done and was really happy for taking the win what means the 3rd worlds title for me !
Looking forward to Copenhagen !
