Redline congratulates MARTIJN SCHERPEN on taking the overall Euro title for 2009!

Posted by the International team on July 21, 2009

It's been ten years since a Dutch rider has earned the No.1 European title. Back in 1999, the No.1 Euro plate was held by a young, moppy-headed BMXer named ROBERT deWILDE. And now, exactly one decade later, a rider from Holland has brought home the No.1 European Championship title to their country.

The ten year drought for a Dutch-owned No.1 Euro title was ended recently at the Euro Championship finals, held on a tight indoor track in Denmark. And with pure consistency for the final two points races of the series, Scherpen did exactly what was needed:

"Coming into this event," Scherpen explained, "I was leading by just a mere 3 points in front of Belguim's Arnoud Dubois. On Saturday I won all my motos and so did he. We both didn't lose a point until the final. In the main event, I had a pretty bad gate and got shut down by Hamon straight out of the gate, but I managed to finish in 5th while Arnoud finished 3rd." The way the Euro point system works, this tied the two titles contenders going in to Sunday's final race.

"Again on Sunday, we both didn't lose a point" states the main webmaster for MartijnScherpen.com, "And in the main, I picked lane 1 - with Arnoud in 2. The pressure was on! But I got the best gate start for me of the entire weekend and snapped hard. I had a little bit of trouble coming over the 2nd jump and slipped a little in the first turn, which messed up my momentum for the 2nd straight. I didn't see Arnoud in front of me, so I thought he must be somewhere close. But he wasn't. In the last turn I saw that he crashed on the first straightaway. My Dutch teammate Roy van den Berg won the main again, but I wound up with the most points and overall title. Now I finally can call myself the 2009 European Champion!"

With the Dutch National Team and their Redline Flight bikes dominating the entire Euro Champ series all through 2009; outnumbering all others in practically every single main event - and now a No.1 European title, REDLINE bikes couldn't be more pleased. We congratulate Martijn, as well as the entire "Orange Crush" for an incredible season of racing!
