7th place at GVA Trofee Anzencross
on December 29, 2011
I went into this day knowing that it was my last race and my last chance at a good result. We showed up at the race at around 8:00 am, 3 hours before our race, and headed to registration. Everything went smoothly and we kitted up to warm up on the course. The course was nearly dead flat with a tough mud section, a giant ditch we had to jump over, BMX jumps, man made rollers and a few ramps and stairs to go up and down. I got a front row call up out of 80 kids and was feeling ready to go. The start straight was really long and had a head wind so I waited to jump from 5th to the front. When I went to make my move before the turn, one of the Telenet Fidea riders tried to cut me off and throw some elbows. Barring that I got passed him and slotted into 3rd right behind Mathiue Van der Poel. Van der poel and I opened a gap up through the 1st mud section and I began to open a gap up on him. With me doing the pace making we hit the end of the 1st lap with 10 seconds over 5 chasers. Van der Poel wasn’t working with me so by the end of the 2nd lap we all cam back together in a group of 8. Van der Poel's teammate sat up and let him attack and he rode away for the win. I continued to battle with the others for the top 5 spots but I made a bobble on the last lap and was only able to hang on for 7th. I was also one of the only juniors to jump the double in the race, showing my BMX background.
